Michael Byrne has a deep, business-focused understanding of the 50-state system of insurance regulation, developed over 20 years focused exclusively on regulatory and transactional matters in the insurance industry. Mike is currently engaged in various InsurTech initiatives with both traditional and new players. Mike advises and advocates before regulators on company formations and licensing, new platforms and products, and structuring compliant operations. He has drafted and negotiated complex producer and administration agreements, re/insurance policies, and agreements in M&A and financings relating to regulatory approvals and complex regulatory issues. Mike, who is based in NYC, has a nationwide practice that spans all lines of insurance. He is a recognized leader in the E&S market.
Martha Notaras is a Partner at venture capital fund, XL Innovate, investing in insurtech, including startups focused on data & analytics and new business models. XL Innovate’s investments include Lemonade, Embroker, New Energy Risk, Notion, Cape Analytics, Slice Labs, Stonestep and Pillar Technologies,. Martha serves on the following boards: Notion, an IoT home awareness solution provider reducing risk for insurers and homeowners; GeoQuant, creator of a revolutionary platform for measuring political risk in real time, using machine learning; Pillar Technologies, which monitors and measures risk in construction sites; board observer at Cape Analytics, a machine learning company focused on property data.
Previously, Martha ran corporate development for DMG Information, the business data and analytics division of the Daily Mail and General Trust plc. Of the 20 investments she made at DMG Information, two achieved and maintained valuations over $1 billion. She has served as board director for many early and growth stage companies, including 10 years on the board of Risk Management Solutions, which provides catastrophe models to the insurance industry. Her prior experience includes investment banking at Merrill Lynch and commercial banking at Credit Suisse. She received her A.B. cum laude from Princeton University and her MBA from Harvard Business School, where she was a Baker Scholar.
Ryan Cole joined Everest’s Insurance group in July 2017 as a Director, Corporate Underwriting. In this role Ryan supports the transformation of the underwriting function at Everest Insurance by working closely with functional and business leaders to drive implementation of new technology, tools and models.
Ryan previously worked at Liberty Mutual where he held a variety of underwriting roles over the last 13 years. Most recently Ryan was Assistant Vice President, Product Development & Data Analytics. In this role Ryan led a cross-functional team of actuaries, underwriters and software developers to build predictive models to reduce loss ratios and streamline the underwriting process. Amongst his many other accomplishments Ryan was also successful in establishing a joint partnership with an autonomous vehicle company and leveraging the relationship to develop a first of its kind new product specific to this emerging risk. Ryan holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Psychology from Amherst College.
Alex Schwarzkopf is the co-founder and CEO of Pillar Technologies, an environmental safety solution using smart sensor networks and cloud analytics to predict, mitigate workforce exposure, and forfend property damages on the construction site.
Before co-founding Pillar, Alex and his team built a company around wearable concussion monitoring. Prior to his work in startups, Alex spent time working for Tesla Motors in Silicon Valley and iRobot in Massachusetts.
Pillar Technologies won the Forbes Under 30: Change the World Competition, the 2017 GOOD DESIGN™ Award presented by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and recently completed residency at the Techstars IoT program in NYC.
Alex holds a degree in Electromechanical Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology.
